The Soulsville Charter School is seeking a full-time Alumni Support Counselor for the 2021-2022 school year.

 

The Alumni Support Counselor will be a member of the College and Alumni Support Team (CAST) which manages all aspects of students’ successful transition from high school to postsecondary and oversees alumni’s successful postsecondary attainment.

 

This person in the role has an immense responsibility in the research and development, implementation, and evaluation of the TSCS alumni success program model.

 

Primary responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Develop relationships with other alumni support efforts across the country to share and collect best practices
  • Keep up-to-date on the national and local data, research, and publications related to low-income, first-generation college success
  • Facilitate individualized transition planning for seniors and parents in the final quarter of senior year
  • Maintain regular contact with alumni via social media, text, calls, and in person meetings
  • Conduct regular alumni support advising sessions to assist with financial aid, academics, social transition, career planning
  • Research the desired career paths of alumni and find on and off campus resources to support path
  • Conduct regular academic success support sessions on local campuses
  • Visit alumni at their respective colleges to assist with getting connected to campus resources
  • Support students through institution transfer process, summer school registration, and other changes as needed
  • Connect alumni to job opportunities
  • Organize alumni events at TSCS after the first (December) and second semester (May)
  • Work with alumni and families to complete FAFSA, CSS, IDOC, verification, financial aid appeals, etc.
  • Provide regular communication and support to alumni’s families
  • Consistently maintain database and detailed advising notes, submitting monthly alumni report

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and an ability to relate to and motivate college-age students
  • A commitment to the growth and development of young people and passion for helping students to reach their potential
  • Bachelor’s Degree coupled with work experience and/or personal experience pertaining to the successful college completion of low-income, first-generation students
  • Demonstrated ability to provide services to a population of high school and college students primarily from low-income, first-generation college-bound, and minority backgrounds
  • An interest in and knowledge of the current research and data in college access and success for first generation, low income, and/or students of color
  • Understanding of difficulties associated with transitioning from high school to college for TSCS student population
  • Strategic thinker with excellent organizational and time-management skills
  • Self-starter with strong entrepreneurial drive: takes initiative; comfortable operating in growth mode; can operate self-sufficiently, but also collaboratively as part of a team
  • Superb written and oral communication skills
  • Proficiency in social media applications, MS Excel, database management, and internet savvy
  • Ability to design and build a program to meet specified goals
  • Ability to work on weekday evenings and/or weekends when necessary
  • Active driver’s license and ability/desire to travel to visit alumni
  • Demonstrated belief in the mission of The Soulsville Charter School 

About Soulsville

 

The Soulsville Charter School (TSCS)’s mission is to prepare students for success in college and life in an academically rigorous, music-rich environment. Located in the inner-city neighborhood of Soulsville, USA, in Memphis, TN, TSCS is adjacent to the site of historic Stax Records, where the Stax Museum of American Soul Music now celebrates and preserves the Stax story.  TSCS began with sixty sixth graders in 2005 and now serves 580+ students in grades 6-12 with about a third of the students living in the Soulsville community and 86% receiving free or reduced price lunch.   TSCS is a tuition-free, public charter school that is about changing kids’ life trajectories.

 

100% of our first three graduating classes (2012, 2013, 2014) were accepted into college.
