School Overview

The Soulsville Charter School (TSCS)’s mission is to prepare students for success in college and life in an academically rigorous, music-rich environment. Located in the inner-city neighborhood of Soulsville, USA, in Memphis, TN, TSCS is adjacent to the site of historic Stax Records, where the Stax Museum of American Soul Music now celebrates and preserves the Stax story.  TSCS began with sixty sixth graders in 2005 and now serves 660 students in grades 6-12 with about a third of the students living in the Soulsville community and majority economically disadvantaged.  TSCS is a tuition-free, public charter school that is about changing kids’ life trajectories.

Job Description

As the Math Coach, this person is responsible for the development and support of all math teachers, the ongoing improvement of the Math Department, and ultimately student outcomes. The Math Coach is responsible for ensuring that the vision for math instruction is aligned to the school’s mission of preparing students for college and life success in an academically rigorous environment. This person also participates as an important member of the whole-school Academics Team.

Primary Responsibilities 

 

Instructional Coach

  1. Support the development and growth of teachers
  2. Plan and lead coaching meetings based on teachers’ needs, including co-planning meetings and post-observation debrief meetings
  3. Provide teachers with feedback on instructional plans, assessments, and data
  4. Observe lessons regularly and provide teachers with written and in-person feedback and coaching
  5. As needed, model and or co-teach lessons
  6. Ensure adaptations to curriculum support students while maintaining the intended rigor and goals of lessons with fidelity
  7. Provide accountability for teachers to meet school expectations

Math Department Head

  1. Research and develop vision, goals, and priorities for Math Department
  2. Plan and lead department meetings
  3. Ensure vertical alignment of courses with a special focus on college readiness and ACT-alignment
  4. Promote a collaborative spirit in the Math Department
  5. Uphold the pillars of CPM in the Math Department (collaborative learning; problem-based learning; mixed, spaced practice)
  6. Implement effective internal assessment systems to monitor academic progress, including SSIAs, TNReady, NWEA, Level Up Tracker
  7. Implement effective data analysis of all internal and external assessments
  8. Maintain calculator inventory and prepare calculators for testing needs

Academics Team Members

  1. Participate in Academics Team Meetings
  2. Collaborate with Academics Team to make budgetary decisions
  3. Support ongoing professional growth of all Academics Team members by sharing best practices and personal practices with one another for the purposes of norming, learning, and improving
  4. Develop strong external relationships with partner organizations
  5. Advocate for the instructional health of the school at-large

  3. Familiarity with TN Math Standards and ACT college readiness benchmarks
  4. Familiarity and working knowledge of both state and national assessment measures
  5. Ability to design professional development and facilitate various size groups using facilitative leadership skills
  6. Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines under pressure
  7. Ability to work independently and manage-up when needed
  8. Self-starter with strong entrepreneurial drive: takes initiative; comfortable operating in growth mode; can operate self-sufficiently, but also collaboratively as part of a team
  9. Strategic thinker
  10. Ability to design and build a program to meet specified goals
  11. Familiarity with statistics and strong analytical ability
  12. Strong instructional expertise and the ability to make practical use of data
  13. Ability to produce reports in a variety of formats integrating various data sources
  14. Strong knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint (as well as the Google Suite) with the ability to learn new software applications and systems
  15. Excellent written and oral communication, planning, and organizational skills
  16. Ability to work urgently in a fast-paced and results-oriented environment

  • Minimum of five years of experience teaching in a math classroom
  • Intimate knowledge of CPM curriculum
  • Demonstrated high expectations for a population of students primarily from low-income, first-generation college-bound, and minority backgrounds
  • Interest in and knowledge of the current research and data in mathematics education
  • Ability to craft and execute a vision for becoming a proof point and national model for mathematics education
