POSITION TITLE:                     Dean of Curriculum and Instruction – High School

 

REPORTS TO:                              High School Director, The Soulsville Charter School

 

POSITION:                         The Soulsville Charter School, full-time regular, exempt

 

POSITION DESCRIPTION:  The Dean of Curriculum and Instruction has the primary responsibility of assisting the School Director with administrative and instructional functions to meet the educational needs of students and carry out the mission and goals of the school.   The Dean of Curriculum and Instruction will oversee every facet of the school’s operation that directly impacts student learning. This will include monitoring of classroom instruction, management of all internal and external assessment data, and curriculum development for all subject areas. The Dean of Curriculum and Instruction will be responsible for direct oversight of all instructional staff.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Serve as instructional leader with oversight of curriculum development and student assessment (internal and external).
  • Provide teachers with feedback on curriculum: e.g., unit plans, unit tests, and long-term plans
  • Oversee professional development of all education staff.
  • Supervise the daily instructional work of teachers.
  • Conduct weekly teacher observations and provide feedback on performance.
  • Track teacher observations and track teacher submission of lesson plans, unit plans, and long-term plans.
  • Communicate regularly with the High School Director concerning student achievement, curriculum development, professional development, staff evaluations, and the budgetary needs for each.
  • Implement effective internal assessment systems to monitor academic progress of students throughout the year.
  • Implement and oversee systems for data analysis of all internal and external assessments, coordinating and leading data analysis meetings with teachers.
  • Ensure curriculum alignment with standards for the State of Tennessee.
  • Seek and share curriculum best practices from other schools and professional journals.
  • Coordinate teacher recruitment and assist School Director(s) and Executive Director in hiring process for all instructional staff, including those who teach exceptional children.
  • Assist in planning and implementing summer Staff Training, Planning, and Preparation.
  • Attend teacher meetings, support teachers, and facilitate positive faculty dynamics.
  • Coordinate various school interventions to increase student achievement.
  • Assist School Director in facilitating regular school-wide staff meetings.
  • Articulate and model the school’s values to students, families, staff and the community.
  • Collaborate with School Director and other members of the leadership team (Executive Director, Dean of Curriculum and Instruction-High, Dean of Students, etc.) concerning student achievement and student assessment.
  • Collaborate with School Director and other members of the leadership team (Executive Director, Dean of Curriculum and Instruction-High, Dean of Students, etc.) concerning all teaching.
  • Hold high expectations for all students and teachers.
  • Perform other reasonable duties as assigned by the School Director and other Soulsville Management.

  • At least 3 years of K-12 teaching experience.
  • Experience managing and leading adults.
  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree or related experience preferred.
  • Tennessee teaching licensure.
  • Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills, including excellent customer service.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state regulations and statutes.
  • Ability to handle and prioritize multiple complex tasks within a deadline and with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail. 
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong follow-through skills for completing projects.
  • A strong sense of protocol, tact, and diplomacy and ability to work well with a variety of people and personalities and a willingness to take and utilize constructive feedback.
  • An understanding of non-profit organizations, events, and especially youth development missions.
  • Enthusiastic self motivation, the ability to motivate others, and little need for direct supervision.. 
  • An appreciation of music and various musical styles.
  • Availability to work flexible hours, including some weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to stand or sit for long periods of time; ability to lift boxes weighing up to 25 lbs; ability to stoop and reach; ability to climb stairs.
  • Knowledge of computers and software program (i.e. MS Word, Excel and others) and aptitude and willingness to learn new software programs through hands-on use and self study.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and show proof of liability insurance coverage as required by the laws of the State of Tennessee and be willing and able to obtain an F class endorsement or other endorsements as required.
  • Demonstrated ability to function as a “team player.”
